Approach

We specialize in solutions.

Our customers are at the core of everything we do, from how we make our strong, sustainable steel to the markets we serve.

We bring to every project a greater understanding of metallurgy and the critical elements required for a quality product. We prioritize collaboration with our customers to ensure that the solutions we deliver meet their specifications and expectations. From design to delivery, and beyond, our knowledgeable customer service team supports the entire project lifecycle to keep our customers informed and preserve lasting partnerships.

How We Approach Our Work

The expertise to create

Special bar quality (SBQ) steel is our niche, and our capabilities extend into tubing and manufactured components. Our customers benefit from our expertise; over 70% of our sales representatives, account managers, and technical service team members have engineering backgrounds. We apply this knowledge through product design and investments in our manufacturing capabilities. We also care about our customers, and provide tailored solutions built on a technical foundation through our:

  • Knowledgeable, experienced, and attentive management and technical teams.
  • Trusted, lasting partnerships with customers across diverse end markets.
  • Leadership position in differentiated markets with a legacy of providing critical applications.

Customer-Focused Innovation

Customer-centered solutions rooted in deep technical knowledge

When customers present their toughest engineering challenges, we focus our research and development efforts on creating the right solution. We partner with our customers during the design phase, make recommendations based on their specifications, and deliver solutions that are cost effective and long lasting. As part of our commitment to providing strong, sustainable steel, we invest in our assets (including our lab and testing capabilities, our jumbo bloom vertical caster, and our production machinery and technology) because we believe that specialty steel has an important place in the market – now and in the future.

    Lower-cost, corrosion-resistance solution for offshore wells: 4130ModSS

In partnership with a large oil and gas distributor, we developed a lower-cost alloy that would meet corrosion-resistance standards for offshore wells in sour service environments. We tested the grades in a lab environment to very specific customer requirements in accordance with NACE MR0175 standards, and partnered with a distributor to provide this comprehensive solution for applications in wells off the coast of Louisiana. As a result of this collaboration, we developed – and currently offer as part of our portfolio – steel grade 4130ModSS.

Expanding our production capabilities for bulldozer parts

A major provider of mining equipment came to us with a need for specific bulldozer parts that required large sizes of heavy seamless mechanical tubing. These parts come in direct contact with mined materials, and therefore require strength, durability, and a long lifecycle. We worked with the customer’s specifications to design the right steel solution – while expanding our size range.

Maximizing miles per gallon with our clean steel

Our automotive customers must comply with corporate average fuel economy (CAFE) standards from government regulations, and we work with them to increase miles per gallon for vehicles of all sizes. For one automotive customer, we engineered our steel for use in sliding cam shaft components. Since our steel is cleaner and stronger, the sliding cam shafts meet the required loads with less steel weight – which means more miles per gallon. And in this case, better design also means better for the environment.

Markets

From critical automotive components that must withstand continual friction to energy solutions employed in the harshest conditions of deep sea, Metallus provides made-to-order, high-value, reliable solutions in applications where success is the only option. Our metallurgical expertise and material treatment capabilities increase lifecycle and enhance durability in the industrial, aerospace and defense, automotive, and energy markets.
