Ground Vehicles

Two military tanks are advancing in a field, kicking up dust. Their main artillery cannons are prominent, and the scene suggests a training exercise or maneuver.

The same steel we supply to the automotive and off-highway vehicle markets, engineered to military-grade requirements.

Whether in direct combat, transporting people and equipment, or clearing obstacles, ground vehicles in the defense industry must withstand intense conditions and keep people safe. Metallus proudly supplies materials that go into the applications of these vehicles, including components of suspension systems, turrets, and powertrains. As a leading engineered automotive steel supplier for power transfer applications, our customers trust our reputation and capabilities to scale up those same materials for use in the heavy-duty military vehicles that operate on land.

Applications

Suspension Components

Suspension components in vehicles work together to provide stability and control by absorbing shocks, maintaining tire contact with the road, and supporting the vehicle’s weight. Our steel can be found in suspension components like tracks, pinions, axles, and torsion bars.

Grades of Steel: 1045, 1345, 8640, 4130, 4145H, 434

Turret Components

The steel that goes into pivotal parts of a turret must withstand motion, as well as maintain sturdiness. Our steel can be found in the gun barrels, trunnions, housing, and other parts of turrets.

Grades of Steel: 4340, 4140, 4150

Powertrain Components

The powertrain of a vehicle transfers power from the engine to the wheels, enabling movement and determining the vehicle’s speed and performance. For the same reasons our customers across the automotive industry choose our steel, our ground vehicle customers choose our steel for the components of engines, drivelines, and transmissions, as well as gears, bearings, and crankshafts.

Grades of Steel: 5120, 5130, 4140, 4150, 4320, 8620, 9310, and more
