Renewables

Our vision at Metallus is harnessing the enduring power of high-performance metals to make the world a better place.

We support the transition to clean energy in our own sustainability goals, and work alongside our customers to design and manufacture the right materials for products that enable the delivery of clean energy. We recognize the importance of renewable energy sources and continuously work with our customers to obtain that energy in the most efficient way.

Why Metallus?

Metallus is part of a team of companies that has been awarded funding from the Department of Energy to advance surface treatment technology and develop a new chemistry for geothermal well drill bits.

Applications

Our clean, reliably produced steel strengthens applications throughout the renewables market, including those featured below.

Wind Gear Box

Our history in the bearing industry enhances our expertise in manufacturing clean steel. Our high-strength steel has a high surface hardness, which is essential for turbine gear boxes, in addition to long fatigue lifecycles.

Grade of Steel: 52100

Geothermal Drill Bits

Manufactured drill bits feature proprietary impact materials, which are suitable for the harsh environments of drilling wells and can withstand high-temperature environments.

Grade of Steel: Impact 7

Case Study

  • An oil drilling rig under a dramatic cloudy sky. Industrial equipment and structures are visible with some workers wearing safety gear on the site.

Developing New Technology with DOE Funding

As companies explore geothermal energy options for clean energy delivery, our expertise and Impact 7 material used in the oil and gas industry will be crucial components in the development of drill bits for geothermal. At Metallus, we constantly seek ways to further improve our materials and extend their lifecycle. In partnership with Argonne National Laboratory, Ames National Laboratory, the Baker Hughes Company, and Bluewater Thermal Solutions, a team was recently awarded funding from the Department of Energy to advance surface materials technologies to improve the wear resistance of bottom hole assembly (BHA) components. Part of this project involves the development of a new chemistry that would be most suitable for the ultra-fast boriding process. The goal is to increase the wear life of rock-engaging BHA components by 25% over the cladding that is currently in the components.
