Marine

A large cargo ship with a rusty hull is moored at a dock. Water is being discharged from its ballast tanks at sunset.

When high performance matters most, customers in the marine market choose our Metallus steel to increase power throughput.

Our assets and operating practices allow us to produce clean steel that can deliver improved power density for customer applications. Using our UltrapremiumTM steelmaking practices we reduced the likelihood of inclusions in the steel that can lead to failure during cyclical loading, allowing manufacturers to increase power throughput without changing the size of the components responsible for power transmission inside the application. The result: optimum performance, a longer lifecycle, and more time on the water.

Why Metallus?

Metallus holds certifications with the DNV and Lloyd’s (for our Faircrest, Gambrinus, and Harrison locations) to provide steel to major outboard engine manufacturers.

Applications

Our clean, reliably produced steel strengthens applications throughout the marine market, including those featured below.

Engine Gears and Pinions

Mechanical power transmission products, like gears and pinions, experience high stresses and cyclical loading, which makes them susceptible to failure from inclusions in the steel. Our UltrapremiumTM technology minimizes the size and likelihood of inclusions in the steel, resulting in higher loading and/or longer life in these critical components.

Grades of Steel: 4130, 4140, 4340, 4820, 8620, 9310

Marine Crankshafts

Metallus is a significant provider of steel that goes into medium-speed marine engine crankshafts used for marine propulsion. In these applications, high fatigue strength and wear resistance are critical to ensure long service life.

Grades of Steel: 4130, 4140, 41XX Modifieds

Pressure Vessel and Shipbuilding Seamless Tubing

Metallus seamless mechanical tubing offers extensive size capabilities for heavy-wall applications like pressure vessels and shipbuilding. Tubing can be used in a variety of applications, including piping systems, fittings, flanges, and valves.

Grades of Steel: 1026, 1517VCbCa2
