Internal Combustion Engines (ICE) and Hybrids

The image shows a motion blur effect from the side of a black car, with a focus on the rearview mirror, driving along a tree-lined road with other vehicles.

The parts unseen – the crankshafts, the gears and shafts of the powertrain, wheel-end components, and more – are the parts that power vehicles.

These parts are at the core of motion in SUVs and pickup trucks and require steel that is strong and durable. Metallus produces clean and high-quality steel that is designed to withstand years and miles on the road. As our customers continue to develop power-dense designs that require higher performance steel, we collaborate with them to design steel solutions that take weight out of vehicles and improve fuel economy.

Our long history in the automotive market positions us as trusted partners and experts in designing semi-finished options. We provide program management support, including the capacity to guide product launches, as our customers innovate new applications for ICE and hybrid vehicles.

Applications

Our clean, reliably produced steel strengthens applications throughout the light vehicle market, including those featured below.

Crankshafts

The backbone of a light vehicle engine requires metal that has a high fatigue strength and wear resistance. Our material science and technology advancements led us to create Metallus MicroTec® grades (including 1530), which eliminate post-forged heat treatment and enhanced machinability while still delivering the needed strength, ductility, and fatigue characteristics requested by customers.

Powertrain Gears and Shafts

We are a leading supplier of value-added automotive steel products for the components that propel vehicles. Our Ultrapremium™ vacuum carburizing automotive steels provide improved heat-treat properties for gears. Along with investments to produce the sizes that shafts require, we apply our materials and expertise to manufacture shafts that turn with less friction and wear.

Grades of Steel: 4140, 5130, 5120, 8320
