Our team members can identify the right product, size, steel grade, and finishing components for the project; to engineer a custom steel chemistry; or tap into our third-party partners for additional support.

Our in-house laboratories complete testing and verification for product batches and issue appropriate certifications. In addition, our lab technicians also engage in development and customer-focused work, as well as internal research. The technical team also helps customers resolve issues or claims as needed.

Labs at Metallus
Our three in-house laboratories include onsite testing equipment to verify and certify that samples from each order batch meet customers’ specifications. We perform a variety of tests: mechanical, ultrasonic, chemistry, and physical modeling. We also have the capability to measure the cleanliness of steel and ensure that it is free from impurities.
Our Gambrinus Metallurgical Laboratory offers heat testing (etches, non-destructive metallurgical testing, grain size), product testing (hardness, tensiles, impacts), and certifications. Our Faircrest Control Laboratory offers melt chemistry, in-process testing, heat chemistry testing, and product chemistry testing. And our Application Metallurgical Laboratory offers steel cleanliness and material characterization, complaint resolution and customer support, manufacturing and quality support, commercial strategy support, failure analysis, and chemical analysis. Our technical capabilities are important contributors to our clean steel practices.

Metallus’ Tundish Design
The tundish in our jumbo bloom vertical caster is a critical component of the steelmaking process. It must transport clean steel from the ladle to the continuous casting molds in steady-state and transient conditions. Thus, the design of the tundish is critical for promoting inclusion flotation, avoiding slag emulsification, prohibiting reoxidation, and providing a consistent flow and temperature to all casting strands to ensure the final product meets our standards. To design the tundish of our jumbo bloom vertical caster, we used a physical water model to simulate the flow of steel, as well as a computational fluid dynamics virtual model. This is a critical part of the caster that allows us to deliver bearing-quality steels using a strand caster.
